Let’s Talk Coffee Beans!

At Raff’s Cafe, we’re always ready for a good cup of coffee. Coffee is an essential part of American life. Whether you’re an aficionado or just like a nice cup in the morning, for most of us, it is part of our everyday lives. But how much do you really know about America’s favorite morning beverage? Today we’re going to look at the basis of what makes good coffee. So next time you’re searching for “coffee near me” you’ll know what you’re talking about.

Let’s take a look at the four most common types of coffee beans and what makes them different.

Arabica

Most of us find the brand or roast that we like and take the rest for granted. But do you know what type of beans your favorite coffee is? Odds are it’s Arabica. Arabica beans make up a whopping 60% of commercial production. Despite being the most common type of bean, Arabica plants are difficult to cultivate. They require plenty of water, well-draining soil, natural shade, and minimal variation in temperature. They also do best at high elevations and in mineral-rich soils. Those precise conditions are challenging to maintain, plus there is the added difficulty that Arabica plants are susceptible to fungal diseases.

Despite all those challenges, Arabica remains a favorite among coffee lovers because of its subtle and complex flavor profile. It is less acidic than other beans and is known for its sweeter and delicate flavor compared to other varieties.

Robusta

As its name suggests, Robusta is a more robust plant than Arabica. These beans have a higher caffeine content, which makes for a heartier plant because caffeine acts as a natural insect repellant. Their flavor is also much stronger and earthier than Arabica, which is why most Americans do not prefer it. However, Robusta is the most common coffee bean in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa where brewing it very strong is the norm. Robusta beans are best for espresso and are often found in instant coffee.

Liberica and Excelsa

We’re grouping these last two together because Excelsa beans are a member of the Liberica family. Both are very rare commercially because they require very specific growing conditions. If you ever have occasion to try either, you will be treated to a fruity aroma and flavor.
